Properties of Matico
Buddleja globosa Hope, more commonly known as “Matico”, is an endemic shrub of Chile.
This review was conducted to compile available information on the medicinal properties of this plant, its active substances and its mechanisms of action in biological processes. Materials and methods: The information of this review was obtained by searching for keywords Analgesic, Antimicrobial activity, Anti-inflammatory, Buddlejaceae and Herbal extract in scientific articles published in indexed journals, using the electronic databases EBSCO, MEDLINE and LILACS.
Results: Originally used by the Mapuche people, Matico stands out for its oral and topical medicinal properties: anti-inflammatory, analgesic, healing, disinfectant and antioxidant. These mechanisms are mediated by specific substances present in the leaves, bark and roots of Matico, in addition, the cells of the plant present a specific interaction with certain cells in human tissues, such as oral mucosa. Conclusion: There is evidence supporting the medicinal properties and the mechanisms of action of this plant in processes like healing, inflammation, pain regulation and disinfection of tissues.
